Principles

Our core principle is that a designer needs to be directly involved in the research foundation that will ultimately support the design they intend to create. We believe it is critical for our professionals to foster a deeper understanding of the “why” of design. This approach helps both Pivot’s designers and their client organizations to be more open and innovative.

Design Research Principles

We created these design research principles to establish a rigour that our designers follow in the creation of their work.

  • Understand People
    • audience: users/customers
    • business people
    • designers
  • Understand the Organization
    • the business
    • the competitive marketplace
    • the project and purpose
  • Understand Use
    • scenarios of use and tasks
  • Understand Context
    • social, cultural, environmental — circumstances, factors,
      backgrounds, relationships
  • Build a case of Design Evidence
    • combine insights and inspiration
    • visualize the research
    • find opportunities in the research
