Creating Intranet Guidelines for an International Enterprise Organization

By speaking directly with end users, we were able to educate developers and create a dynamic community portal for OpenText’s global organization.
OpenText is an international enterprise software company with more than 3,800 employees and 114 million users worldwide. As a growing global company, it has been a challenge for OpenText to maintain brand consistency across its many corporate products.

In order to make it easier for OpenText content creators around the world, we worked with OpenText to design an easily accessible, comprehensive intranet site to house the company’s visual brand guidelines.

We began with a Compass Worksession and interviewed project stakeholders to understand the intranet’s key users.

We then spoke to users from around the world, developing and refining user profiles that captured specific needs, perceptions, frustrations, and contexts of use.

Our Design Evidence™ showed that users wanted:

  • To quickly find specific items
  • To efficiently find related information
  • To easily share information with team members

To fulfill the user needs we:

  • Created an interface with a prominent search bar and better information architecture;
  • Included relevant links in the sidebar of all detailed pages; and
  • Incorporated an export/email/print option on each page

Our design of the new visual guidelines intranet maintains a consistent visual style as the overarching OpenText brand. This familiarity of brand ensures that all users globally are immediately comfortable with the look and feel of the new site.
